Dear Mines Community,

We have all been watching the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey across the Gulf Coast region.  For many in the Mines community (students, faculty, staff, alumni, friends), this is home.  Nearly all of us know someone who is coping with the impacts of this storm.

External events like this can be hard to process while also managing the daily responsibilities of being a Mines student.  Students who need assistance or support in coping with issues caused by this storm (for example, questions about excused absences, counseling support, or balancing academic and personal responsibilities) should reach out to a Mines staff member.  Students can also send an email with questions, or simply to express the difficulties they are experiencing, to care@mines.edu, or call (303) 273-3350.

Challenging times bring out the best in people and remind us of the importance of lending a helping hand to others in need. We certainly have seen this in the news, and salute the amazing first responders, local officials, and communities of people who are rescuing those stranded by floods, offering shelter, providing food and clothing, and doing whatever they can to help.

Students and faculty have reached out to me with ideas for assistance and support.  We are considering those and have invited alumni in impacted areas to send us their thoughts on meaningful options that we might pursue as a community. We will send follow-up announcements via email and the Daily Blast as campus efforts to assist these communities are organized.  The need for support and assistance will continue well after the storm abates.

Related to this, the Mines Foundation is organizing a fund to assist students impacted by Hurricane Harvey, and details will follow shortly. One of our students is also initiating a campaign to raise funds for Red Cross hurricane relief efforts. One of our faculty members has suggested offering available rooms in our homes for temporary housing relief.

For all who are impacted – please know that you are in the thoughts and prayers of the Mines Community, and we hope for immediate relief from this storm and for a safe and speedy recovery from its impacts.

Sincerely,

Paul
